The costs associated with funeral services can be a source of stress and confusion for many. At 4-Celebrations, we're here to guide you through these difficult times and help you understand the costs involved.
Funeral expenses: how much do they cost and how can I save?
A general analysis of costs in the funeral industry reveals that a funeral in a private facility can cost an average of $5,700. In contrast, opting for services provided by cooperatives can significantly reduce these expenses, with an average cost of around $3,100. This significant difference underlines the importance of considering various options when planning funeral services, to better manage the financial aspects of these difficult moments.

Additional fees
In addition to the cost of funeral services, several other costs may be added:

Administrative fees: To manage and organize services.
Death notice: Publication in newspapers or online.

💡 Did you know that inCanada, anyone has the legal right to purchase funeral goods from a provider other than the one where they purchased the funeral services. This includes cremation urns, burial vaults, caskets and even memorial plaques.
A funeral home can't refuse to sell you anything, raise prices or treat you differently because you bought it somewhere else. The law went into effect in 2017 and applies to online and brick-and-mortar stores.
There are, however, a few exceptions to the rule, such as commemorative plaques.
Incineration as an alternative
There are many reasons why people choose cremation over burial. Cremation is often considered one of the most environmentally friendly options for disposing of human remains. In fact, it is the most environmentally friendly method of disposal, as it requires no landfills, toxic chemicals or embalming fluids.
However, it's important to note that cremation is not always more environmentally friendly than traditional burials. There are many factors to consider when deciding what's best for you and your loved ones.
Use the $2,500 death benefit
The Quebec Pension Plan may offer you financial assistance in the form of a death benefit of $2,500. The maximum payable under the Quebec Pension Plan Special Benefits Act is $2,500 per person. This includes benefits payable on death and for a single adult. If you are entitled to the maximum, there are no deductions.
However, certain amounts must be deducted from the maximum payable: benefits payable on death, income or the residue of such income if it was cashable, cheques issued by the deceased that are cashed within 30 days of the date of death, and pre-authorized payments due within 30 days of the date of death. If your total exceeds the maximum payable, there are several exceptions to the maximum payable rule. According to the Régie des rentes du Québec, these exceptions are as follows. Read more.
