Want to celebrate love differently?

Although it can be presented in different ways, love is a universal feeling and value. However, there are many ways to celebrate this love in the world.

Valentine's Day is not celebrated in the same way from one country to another.

Before discussing the various customs and traditions in other countries, we will talk about the origins of Valentine's Day.

Where does Valentine's Day come from?

Valentine's Day was first celebrated in Britain. It was thought that February 14 was the day chosen by birds to mate.

We can also go back to the Middle Ages when Valentine's Day was a poetic tradition.

Contemporary customs

Today, it is customary to exchange greeting cards on Valentine's Day. These cards are not necessarily reserved for a lover, but for people we appreciate.

Lovers will also take the opportunity to give each other flowers, chocolates, gifts and a nice dinner at a restaurant.

How is love celebrated in the world?

Some countries have their own ways of celebrating love. This is the case of South Korea, Japan, China and Russia, among others.

Discover their traditions!

Celebrating love in Asia

Asia is known for its traditions that differ from ours in North America. This is also the case for the theme of Love!

In Japan

In Japan, on February 14th, women buy presents and prepare little gifts for their lovers.

March 14th is "White Day". Traditionally, men use this day to give white marshmallows. Now, they give white chocolates, white candies and white lingerie to their sweetheart.

Single? Celebrate like the Japanese and prepare a plate of black beans on April 14th during the "Black day".

In Taiwan

In Taiwan, it is the number of roses you give to your sweetheart that counts the most on Valentine's Day.

He will give her 1 rose if she is the love of his life, 11 roses if she is his girlfriend, 99 roses for an eternal love and 108 roses for a proposal.

In Thailand

For Thai people, February 14th is a lucky day. Many choose this date to get married. It is in the district of Bang-Rak in Bangkok that the atmosphere is the most marked!

China

In China, the festival of lovers takes place on July 7 of the lunar calendar and is called "Qixi".

This festival is based on a Chinese legend telling the story of an impossible love between a farmer and a fairy. The farmer would have hidden the clothes of his fairy to keep her. He declared his love by giving them back to her and the fairy decided to stay on earth with him. They were in perfect love until the goddess of heaven decided to bring the fairy back and turned the lovers into stars, separating them by the Milky Way. On the 7th night of the 7th month (July 7), the magpies fly and form a bridge between the two lovers so that they can spend it together.

During the Qixi, the Chinese admire the stars and the young women offer offerings to the fairy who is considered a goddess of love.

In Africa

The Western Valentine's Day has traveled to Africa. Africans, lovers and traders, love this festival.

In South Africa, for example, in addition to throwing big parties and giving expensive gifts, there is a tradition that continues: women pin the name of their lover on their sleeves.

In South America

In South America, love is not necessarily celebrated on February 14. For example, in Brazil it is June 12 and in Colombia it is the 3rd weekend of September.

In any case, we take the opportunity to celebrate love in the broadest sense by offering gifts to friends and relatives. It is also the occasion to organize big parties!

In Europe

In Europe, too, there are adorable traditions surrounding the celebration of love. Take inspiration from Scotland, Wales and Russia to surprise your significant other!

In Scotland

There is a funny tradition in Scotland that the first person of the opposite sex you meet becomes your Valentine for the day.

In Wales

In Wales, January 25th is the day to celebrate love. The tradition is that lovers give each other "love spoons". These are wooden spoons with hearts engraved on them.

Celebrating love in Russia

In Russia, Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 with chocolates and flowers. However, the most popular holiday is the day of family, love and fidelity which takes place on July 8.

On this day, a medal is given to couples who have reached 25 years of life together.
